| Seminar stresses role of open source in intellectual property rights, education |

The Open Source Resource Center conducted an awareness-raising seminar for 47 faculty members of federal colleges and schools at the Federal Government College for Women, F-7/2, Islamabad on Wednesday, 4th April 2007. The participants were briefed about the history, philosophy and importance of open source, especially with regard to intellectual property rights’ issues in Pakistan, and how the academic sector can contribute in grooming an open source culture in the country. They were also shown some popular end-user open source applications, including the Linux operating system, OpenOffice, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird and Gaim. All the participants expressed great enthusiasm and evinced keen interest during the course of the orientation session. The Director Trainings and Colleges, Federal Directorate of Education addressed the audience, and emphasized the importance of open source technologies for the education sector. Dr. Tayyaba Siddiqui, Principal, F.G. College for Women, F-7/2 distributed certificates among the participants. She thanked the Pakistan Software Export Board and the OSRC for conducting an informative seminar. A meeting also took place between Dr. Tayyaba Siddiqui, Principal, F-7/2 College, the faculty members of the college and the OSRC team on the sidelines of the seminar. The Director Trainings and Colleges, Federal Directorate of Education sought the OSRC's services for carrying out a “Master Trainers Program” for federal colleges, so that the Federal Directorate could organize an in-house training program for their 400-plus institutions in the federal territory.
